San Mateo's Transit-Oriented Development, Community Involvement, and Police Activities League

San Mateo is in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula midway between San Francisco and San Jose. The city is conveniently located just south of the San Francisco International Airport, connected to the East Bay by the San Mateo Bridge, linked to points north and south by the Caltrain commuter line rail, and is at the crossroads of Highways 101, 280, and 92. San Mateo’s 16 square miles extend from San Francisco Bay to the coastal hills and include 200 acres of parkland.

The City of Brisbane, referred to by locals as “The City of Stars”, is bordered by San Francisco and South San Francisco to the North and South, Daly City and San Bruno Mountain to the East, and the Brisbane Lagoon and Highway 101 to the West. It is home to approximately 4,282 residents, beautiful San Bruno Mountain, a 580-berth Marina, a Community Pool, tennis courts, and Mission Blue Center where world-class musicians flock to because of its wonderfully accommodating acoustics for live chamber music.

Unlike its neighbors, the weather in Brisbane is oftentimes sunny, due to San Bruno Mountain keeping the fog away from the tiny town that’s nestled in its northern slope. In total, the City of Brisbane encompasses 3.46 sq. miles of land plus 17 sq. miles of water and has outstanding views of the San Francisco Bay.

Visitors to Brisbane are often surprised that a town such as Brisbane exists along the San Francisco Peninsula. Its quaintness and small-town feel are a throw-back to the days when times were simpler and neighbors greeted each other on the street. Such is still the case in Brisbane today, where its walkable streets often result in friendly run-ins and people knowing their neighbors by name. It is an extremely caring community, where volunteers are abundant and eager to make sure their “City of Stars” shines bright.

Recent projects of significance in the City include the 25th Festival of Lights celebration, the Annual Winter Clean-Up, an upgrade to the City’s SCADA system, the preservation of Open Space, and City Hall’s Green Parking Lot.

The community of Brisbane was incorporated in 1961 as a general-law city with a Council-Manager form of government, but there is a rich history that offers perspective into how the process of incorporation came about and which bears reading and understanding. That history has been archived on the City’s website here.

Brisbane Celebrates 25th Anniversary of "Festival of Lights"

Every first Sunday of December since 1986, the City comes together to celebrate the start of the Holiday Season with caroling down its main street, Visitacion Avenue, special musical performances by young ones as well as an adult female choir, and of course, a visit from Santa himself and the lig

Brisbane City Hall’s Green Parking Lot

In 2008, City Hall underwent an extensive 14-mos. remodel to ensure the building was seismically safe. When grant money from the San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program became available, an engineered system for treating stormwater runoff was designed.

Preservation of Open Space

With the majority of Brisbane’s residents living in homes nestled in the northern base of San Bruno Mountain, it seems only fitting for the City to do what it can to protect the natural habitat and scenic views of the Mountain, which itself serves as somewhat of a quiet protector of the homes tha

Upgrade to City’s SCADA System

Currently, the City manages the flow of its water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) by manually operating valves.

Brisbane Properties Get A Winter Clean-Up

Over a weekend in October, the City coordinates a city-wide Winter Clean-Up event for residents to easily discard their fallen leaves, branches, and vegetation which could otherwise find their way into one of the City’s storm drains and cause flooding during the rainy season.
