San Mateo's Transit-Oriented Development, Community Involvement, and Police Activities League

San Mateo is in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula midway between San Francisco and San Jose. The city is conveniently located just south of the San Francisco International Airport, connected to the East Bay by the San Mateo Bridge, linked to points north and south by the Caltrain commuter line rail, and is at the crossroads of Highways 101, 280, and 92. San Mateo’s 16 square miles extend from San Francisco Bay to the coastal hills and include 200 acres of parkland.

Fontana

The City of Fontana is located about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. The City spans approximately 42.4 square miles and has a population of 196,069. The City was incorporated on June 25, 1952, under the laws of the State of California and enjoys all the rights and privileges applicable to a general law city. The City of Fontana employs approximately 565 full-time employees. Services provided include police protection; contracts for fire services; the construction and maintenance of highways, streets, and other infrastructure; waste water and sanitation services; and recreational activities and cultural events. In addition to general government activities, the City Council also serves as the Board of Directors of the Fontana Redevelopment Agency, the Fontana Industrial Development Authority, the Fontana Public Financing Authority, the Fontana Housing Authority, Fontana Community Foundation and the Fontana Fire Protection District.

Over the past year the City of Fontana has achieved several success stories that illustrate the hard work and commitment of the City to its residents and visitors. In June 2011, Chaffey College completed a 30,400 square foot expansion of their facilities thanks in large part to an ongoing partnership between the City of Fontana and Chaffey College. The Fontana Police Department has also partnered with the Fontana Unified School District to create the Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (F.L.I.P.), a program designed at changing the lives of at-risk youths for the better. The F.L.I.P. program is an expanding effort on the already successful Fontana After-School Program, which provides a wide array of services aimed at academic achievement for K-12 children during non-school hours. The senior population in Fontana has also seen their lives enriched thanks to the opening of the Fontana Senior Community Center in May 2011, which has created an enhanced environment in which the city’s senior citizens can be active in. Fontana has over forty parks and communities centers including the new thirty-eight acre Fontana Park that is home to a health and fitness center, aquatic center, skate park, dog park and sport complex. These successes and others like them have help the City of Fontana receive numerous accolades including the 2008 Award for 100 Best Communities for Families by Best Life Magazine and 2010 Award for 100 Best Communities for Young from the America’s Promise Alliance.

Fontana Leadership Intervention Program

Several youth in Fontana have “flipped” their lives around, thanks to a new intervention program. The Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (F.L.I.P.) helps at-risk youth in Fontana bring about positive and lasting changes in their lives. Started in 2010 the F.L.I.P.

After-School Programs

Fontana’s After-School Programs provide an opportunity to merge school reform strategies with community resources to broaden the base of support within the city for education in a safe, constructive environment.

Senior Community Center

The Fontana Senior Community Center has been open for a little over a one year, and it’s already making a big difference in the lives of Fontana’s seniors. The Community Center gives seniors a chance to get out and have some fun in a safe environment.
